Tantalum tungsten alloy is a solid solution alloy formed by adding tungsten element to tantalum as the matrix, which combines the excellent characteristics of both. The mainstream grades include Ta2.5W and Ta10W (containing 10% tungsten).
1、 Physics and High Temperature Performance
1. Ultra high melting point
The melting point reaches 2980-3080 ℃, among which Ta10W has a melting point of about 3000-3100 ℃, much higher than most metal materials, and is suitable for ultra-high temperature environments.
2. High thermal stability
Maintaining structural stability at high temperatures, Ta10W still exhibits creep resistance, low thermal expansion coefficient, and strong resistance to thermal shock at 1600 ℃.
3. High density
The density ranges from 16.6-17.2 g/cm ³, providing excellent radiation shielding capability.
2、 Corrosion resistance
1. Extreme environmental tolerance
In boiling hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, aqua regia, and organic acids, the annual corrosion rate is less than 0.01 mm (better than stainless steel).
2. Limitations
Slowly corrode in hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid; Atmospheric environments above 400 ℃ are prone to oxidation and require inert gas protection or surface coating (such as Ta ₂ O ₅ oxide film).
3、 Special functional characteristics
1. Biocompatibility
Non cytotoxic, suitable for implantable devices.
2. Low neutron absorption
Suitable for neutron reflector materials in the nuclear industry.
3. Processing performance
Wire, foil or complex components are made through processes such as hot forging, cold drawing, vacuum annealing, etc.
4、 Key Limitations and Improvement Directions
High temperature oxidation problem: Inert atmosphere protection is required for temperatures exceeding 800 ℃, and composite coating technology is currently a research and development focus.
Plastic control: High tungsten content leads to decreased ductility, and the heat treatment process needs to be optimized.
Summary: Tantalum tungsten alloy balances high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and processability through solid solution strengthening, and is irreplaceable in the chemical, aerospace, and nuclear industries.
